Book It! Give a Hoot! Books, Check 'Em Out!

I have been searching for a copy of this book for months! I'm so happy I've finally found it, and so far it doesn't look like it's going to disappoint. The Emperor's New Mind is an examination of the human mind as reflected by computers, artificial intelligence, and our understanding of quantum mechanics. The book was originally published in 1989, so some of the information is dated. But that doesn't seem to be of much importance, as most of the ideas are put forth from a hypothetical context that presumes the existence of very powerful and complex computers. It's interesting that the book cites speculation about the state of computer technology in 2010 and, as usual, the tech sector vastly over-estimates its ingenuity. Anyway, catch the back cover summary after the jump...

Talking About Some ATDI

This is a conversation that stemmed from a comment I made on FB. Nothing particularly revelatory, but I've been thinking about the band At The Drive-In a lot lately. This is just an interesting exchange. I'm planning to write more about ATDI in the near future, as it relates to one of the songs from the Hosey album V II. I've abbreviated my friends names, to protect identities.

Patrik Phalen  Are we past that "too school for cool" point where we--especially those of us from the South--where we can all openly admit how absolutely bad ass At the Drive-In was? This may get my hipster license revoked, but I'll take ATDI over Sleigh Bells, Of Montreal, Pavement, and [fill in current Stereogum cream-fest here] any day of the week.

Static Radio Episode 001

Several months ago I did some podcast mixes for our friends at StaticTV. The mixes were made up of about half new songs and half selections from my crates. I also seasoned the mixes with "turntable skits" much like what you hear when you catch Hosey playing live. Having to spin a lot of new music took me outside of my comfort zone which was a lot of fun. I usually tried to work my way through two or three styles in each mix. Well, "styles" according to my perception, which can be kind of strange. I consider Thin Lizzy and Television as being fairly similar, and both are a lot like Soundgarden... I could go on and on. See? It's all relative.

Welcome to the new Hosey Blog + Etc.

Hello Reader,

You have found my blog. My name is Patrik Phalen. I do various musical things. You can catch me performing as one half of the duo Hosey, plus in sundry other contexts in the art world. I'm always working on new stuff. Right now, I'm in the process of starting this new blog and transferring all the old Hosey ephemera to it. You've caught it while it is still under construction, so please don't mind the mess. Otherwise, enjoy your stay.

Have fun.
